    Hello,

Toying with the idea of fitting sat nav, more for looks than anything as I use TT6 on my orbit phone. I do however like the look of it in the dash...

On my car is this almost plug and play, Ie, remove single cd and tray and unit fits in with added aieral?

I know from my last car a bmw to retofit nav I would have needed new wiring looms, brackets, player, headunit etc etc and then almost take the car apart.

    Thanks

As far as I know, as long as you get a command for a W163 as there are a few that will fit but need modifying via canbus adaptor etc, it will fit, the wiring is in place already including the wiring to the roof top aerial, the round plastic bung on the roof near the tail gate is where the aerial mounts, there is info about on the web, cant remember the web link off top of my head, I was thinking of doing mine but I only use the car a few times a week so could not justify the cost, even thought about fitting a double din radio / CD in the slot to fill it, let us know how you go on.

Assuming your car is a 2002 ML (mirrors in indicators) this is really plug and play with a little chopping.
Get a unit that starts with part number A163 xxx xx xx (really, don't buy anything else) the adapter loom and the roof antenna, and off you go. See www.mercupgrades.com COMAND retrofit document
If its a 2001 car, its almost as plug and play, just antenna leads are different so you need more parts
As you get a bit older it becomes a bit harder as speed signal isn't where you need it necessarily

Speak to alfie (on this forum) he can supply good warrantied units - I don't know if he does W163 installs off hand.

    Cheers
    Richard

Fitting comand to your car (ML350) is a doddle. the best unit for your car is A163 820 36 89. You will need a few parts such as an antennae but about 1/2 hour is all thats needed to get it all working. Richards excellent website www.mercupgrades.com will tell you all you need to know.

    noob question

    Hi,

straight in at the deep end here... ive just brought a 2002 ML320 for the wife, and the only problem for her is that there is no sat nav unit ( she must have it fitted as she has had 2 tom tom's stolen from her current car !!!

I have brought a ML Command unit but am thinking that ive probably taken on more than i can chew with this install...

my questions are, how easy is it "really" to put this unit in, ive read Richards website and it looks quite complex.

how do i tell that my car has the Bose Digital?? its currently got a crappy cassette unit with cd changer.

lots more questions but i dont want to ask to many straight out..

p.s - havent got the car yet, as only brought it sunday !!
    thanks chaps.

    When I had a 2000 W163, I installed Comand.

It really is simple to instal, took about an hour, a new loom adapter, a antenna, and fit the unit in the dash. I fitted the antenna on top of the glove box under the dashboard, it gave a great signal.

You only need the £90 one if you are going to put the antenna on the roof. If you are happy to have it under the dash then you can use the cheaper 2004/2005 ML one.

well, the Comand unit arrived today, looks in good condition but clearly the proof is in the fitting and turning the bugger on !!

when i brought it, i new it wouldnt come with a teleatlis cd but hes chucked in a cdr of the uk maps, from using DX in my Honda i know that copies donts seem to work that well, im guessing its the same for the comand unit??

anwyay, im ready for it to be fitted :)

    Alfie...can you help me out...?

I have seen the thread of success with drh1210...can you help me out too?

I live in Italy, and have recently bought the ML320 (2001) from a colleague.
He had previously shipped it from the US. As a consequence it has the US Modular Control System (MCS) instead of the European COMAND unit.

The car has all the necessary components for a complete system: the GPS/cell phone antenna, 6 CD multi-changer etc. All of these are installed and working.

    I just need the A163 820 36 89 unit I believe.

    Cheers.
    Tony

I need advice! Im thinking of getting a Comand Unit, however I would like it fully fitted etc... Does anyone know anyone that would consider fitting one 4 a reasonable price? Or would you suggest getting the unit and fitting myself? Car is a ML270 CDI 2003

It is very easy to fit yourself. Just make sure you get an A163 820 36 89 part number.

    Ml sat nav

    Hi, Thanks Alfie.

What features do the comand units come with? What size is the screen? I am tempted by the double din dash units from Pioneer, Alpine, Sony etc...

    What would you suggest?

    Regards

    Screen size is 5inch colour.

I am biased and would recommend comand so you are best off asking others to get an alternative view.

If you want the car to look like it came from the factory with navigation then I would go for comand. If you are not fussed by that then have a look at Alpine, Pioneer or Kenwood double din units.
